The 6 great advantages of the MULTIPOINT DC transformers

1. The MULTIPOINT transformers can handle up to 20 meters long output wire of 1.5--2.5mm2 without EMC disturbance and voltage drop/power loss, which makes it the optimal choice for wire and track lighting systems.

With 20 meters output wire length, it is possible to locate the MULTIPOINT transformer outside the fire protective down light boxes, therefore, the potential thermal risk is eliminated and the lifespan of the MULTIPOINT transformer is perfectly extended.

The temperature in a normal down light protection box is extremely hot, very often >70 C, far above the rated Ta of all ordinary transformers currently available in market (except for the MULTIPOINT special super-high Ta series with a Ta >70 degrees C).

Undoubtedly, when a standard transformer is placed inside the protection box, the lifespan of the average transformer is greatly jeopardized, and early failure will often occurs.

If the MULTIPOINT transformer is located outside the down light protection box and several down lights are connected in series, there is no risk of over-heating the MULTIPOINT transformers.

Frequently asked questions:

Question: Why the MULTIPOINT DC transformer can handle long wires/track without power loss / voltage drop on the halogen lamp at the end of 20 meters wire/track?

Answer: Ordinary high frequency AC electronic transformer creates big inductance on the long wire; this big inductance not only consumes a lot of energy, but also makes the phased excursion to the current, and causes high temperature inside the transformer.

This is the well-known "skin effect".MULTIPOINT DC transformer generate pulsating DC output instead, which has virtually eliminated the "skin effect", and can therefore handle up to 20 meters long wire and track for halogen lamps.

Question: Why MULTIPOINT transformer can pass EMC test with 20 meters long wire?

Answer: Thanks to the pulsating DC output, and the elimination of the " skin effect", 20 meters wire becomes a small resistance load to the electronic transformer; and hence there is no inductance and distributing capacitance reflecting in the switching circuit, which may causes the switching circuit to operate abnormally and generate big electromagnetism disturbance. MULTIPOINT use two levels of wide frequency filters in the EMI filtering circuitry; as a result, the transformer can pass the EMC test.

Question: In the user instruction MULTIPOINT do recommend that the contractor should make sure not to cross 12V and 230V cables. How important is this and what should the safe distance be?

Answer: It might create EMC problem, MULTIPOINT recommend >200mm distance.

Question: Is it just the fuse that determines how many transformers you could connect parallel to one another?

Answer: the ampere rating of the terminals and the wires on PCB determines the amount of transformers in terms of parallel connection. Our power line terminals are rated 10A, that results that the maximum parallel load may reach 10A x 230V = 2300VA(W).

In other words:

For the MULTIPOINT types HT-4105 and HT-5105:max. 21 units can be connected in parallel.

For the MULTIPOINT types HT-4150 and HT-5150: max. 15 units can be connected in parallel.

For the MULTIPOINT types HT-4210 and HT-5210:max. 10 units can be connected in parallel.

For the MULTIPOINT types HT-4300 and HT-5300:max. 7 units can be connected in parallel.

And so on...

Question: How important is it not to lay cables along the transformer?Answer: It might create EMC problems.

Question: Could one use for example an aluminium shield when there is no other way to lay the cables than along the transformer?

Answer: Yes! the aluminium sheet will do the job, and seal the possible interference out of the cable.
