History of freight forwarding by Couriers

Couriers are service providers in the Express Package, Business Mail and Information Management markets. Most Couriers recognises that its their core business to be reliant on transportation to service its customers and the know that they are therefore emissions-intensive organisations. Most Couriers also recognises that they must play their part in protecting and improving the environment. Throughout all stressing operations, most Couriers also strives to be an environmentally responsible transporter.

Most Couriers recognise that sustainable business practices are fundamental to everybody's future. Therefore, they strive to minimise the environmental impact of their daily business operations and actively seek and embrace initiatives that protect and improve the environment.

Most Couriers like to balance the commercial needs of their business with the responsibility to protecting and improving the environment. Wherever practical, they implement actions that recycle, reuse and minimise waste of the products and resources they consume.

Most Couriers do not do ‘Hub and Spoke’ freight distribution, they have mostly a point-to-point delivery system. Larger Courier organisations like UPS, FedEx, TNT and DHL have introduced years ago the ‘hub and spoke’ freight distribution methodology to their whole network. This system promotes productivity and as such minimisation of emissions by less kilometres being travelled.

Most local Couriers likes to act as independent contractors. They also have organized ‘hub and spoke’ freight distribution business models mainly based on partnerships with other independent contractors. Independent contractors own their own vehicles and pay for their own fuel. This means that they are accountable for their own productivity and are directly financially incentivised to minimise kilometres travelled to provide their services and as such minimise emissions. The key to increased fleet productivity and thus reduced kilometres travelled as well as reduced emissions is to enable the delivery of more packages in one trip by better utilising its existing resources.
